NEW YORK, NY (SMI-GLOBAL-SPORTS-UNIVERSITY MARCH 15-18, 2024)-The Yale's men basketball team defeated Brown University 62-61, on a Buzzer Beater (Game clock-running out) in the Ivy League Madness championship game to win its 2nd Ivy League tournament crown in the last three season at Levien Gymnasium, Columbia University in New York City.
Forward Matt Knowling with 00:01' left in the game scored the winning basket with a jumper to secure the title for Yale & a direct qualifier berth to the NCAA tournament.
With the win, the Bulldogs punched its ticket to the NCAA tournament for the 4th-time under head coach James Jones, and seventh overall in school program history.Yale , Now awaits for its opponent and # Seed later this evening when the NCAA selection show announce the schedule and # Seeds of the tournament.
The game began with Brown's guard Lyndel Erold netting a triple from outside the arc for the first three points of the game. Yale went to the offensive and answered back with 11-2, run during span of 8' to take a commanding lead of 11-5, with 12:06 remaining in the first period. John Poulakidas, Matt Knowling and Danny Wolf led the attack combining for a total of 9-points with three jumpers and layup from inside the paint in the counter-attack.
The Bears settled down and went in a 10-6, run to make it 17-15 Yale, with 06:32 left in the first frame.Kino Lilly Jr. and Malachi Andur hit back-to-back triples while Kalu Anya added a basket with layup in the offensive run.
Yale and Brown traded baskets the rest of the first period to closed-out the frame with the Bulldogs leading 26-22, at the half.
The 2nd half opened with Yale's guard John Poulakidas netting a triple in the first minute to make it 29-27, in favor of the Bulldogs.
The Bears used a 10-6, run to counter-attack and cut the deficit by 3, with Yale leading 35-32, with 13:20 remaining in the game.
After John Poulakidas netted back to back triples to make it 44-40, in favor of Yale, Brown went in a 8-2, run in span of 2' to take the lead of 46-44, for the first time in the game with 08:22 left in the 2nd half. Kalu Anya led the attack with a layup, jumper and couple FTs while Malach Andur added a basket with a jumper for a total of 8-points in the run.
With Brown leading 60-54, and 00:27' left in the game, Yale went in 6-1, run in span of 00:12' to make it 61-60, Bears with 00:15' remaining in the game.Bez Mbeng scored 3-points with a jumper and a FT while John Poulakidas hit his fourth triple of the game the seems to be the clutch shot with 00:15' left in regulation game time.
After John Poulakidas committed a foul with 00:10' left in the game, Malachi Nndur missed the two shots from ft lane giving hope to the Bulldogs for a miracle shot with 00:06' left in the game clock.
With 00:06' left in the game and what appear to be the last play of the game, John Poulakidas inbounded the ball to Danny Wolf who passed it to Bez Mbeng. Mbeng found Matt Knowling after evading the defense and netted the winning basket with jumper to seal the sensational victory of 62-61, for Yale on a Buzzer Beater.
Yale were led by John Poulakidas with 18-points and 4-triples. August Mahoney scored 15-points and registered 3-triples while Matt Knowling contributed with 11-points including the winning basket in the win.
